Less complicated to fit than air or ground source heat pumps, and more efficient than wind turbines in terms of on-shore urban energy generation, solar thermal hot water heating systems are fast becoming one of the most popular renewable technologies that can be retro-fitted to domestic property.
Payback on such a system is typically around eight to ten years, essentially providing free hot water thereafter. Contrary to general consensus, the panels work efficiently in overcast conditions as well as blazing sunshine and the carbon emitted during the production of the system itself is offset in the first two years.
