Greenfurb 2009
The GREENFURB exhibition at Nottingham University, organised by the SIG Sustainable Solutions team, took place on Feb 4th and was attended by over 300 people and 23 suppliers of environmentally friendly and sustainable construction products, including Air Trade Centre, Leaderflush Shapland, Miller Pattison and Sheffield Insulations from within SIG plc. It was the largest exhibition the University’s Centre for the Built Environment had ever been involved with, and was open to students, architects and specifiers from across the East Midlands.
The exhibition was part of a course module allowing postgraduate students to evaluate the technologies available to upgrade a typical house built using 1930’s construction methods. The house, with help from e-on, has already been built on the campus and has been occupied for over 6 months, thus creating the base data. The challenge the students face takes the form of a competition to upgrade the house to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 in 2009, and Level 6 (effectively zero carbon) in 2010. Each student will put forward what they consider to be the best combination of solutions to achieve this, which will be judged by a panel of experts, including a representative of SIG, on Feb 24th.
In the evening lectures were given from well-known figures from the sustainability arena, including; Alan Simpson MP, Penny Poysner from BBC TV’s “No Waste Like Home”, and special guest speaker Dr. Witta Ebel from the Passivhaus Institute in Germany.
The whole event was deemed a great success by professionals and students alike, all benefiting from the opportunity to glean technical guidance from the exhibitors and network with industry professionals.
