Building work has begun on a new £22m hotel near East Midlands Airport, with sustainable construction products playing a major role in its development.

Manchester Airports Group and Azure Properties will use a number of green building products in the hotel''s construction, which it is hoped will deliver an 87 per cent reduction in the site''s carbon emissions.

The developers have claimed that the four-star hotel will be one of the most energy-efficient establishments in the region, with the help of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and its own on-site power plant.

John Atkins, managing director of MAG Developments told This is Derbyshire: ''This development will meet the much-needed demand for quality accommodation and conference facilities in the area. With the economy still in recovery, we felt it was a good opportunity to start the project.''

Earlier this month, the UK''s largest hotel and restaurant group, Whitbread, revealed that many of its Premier Inn buildings would soon benefit from their own PV solar panels in a bid to reduce energy costs.
