Sustainable construction products are set to help a North Lincolnshire hospice go green, as a £85,000 scheme to install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on its roof gets underway, according to the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe has been awarded a £280,000 grant from the Department of Health as part of a £40 million national hospice project which aims to improve facilities at sites across the country.

A total of 15 PV solar panels will be added to the building''s east-facing sloped roof to provide renewable energy and a solar thermal heating system, which the centre''s management hope will reduce its gas consumption.

Hospice director Alison Tindall told the newspaper that the organisation''s current utility bills were ''huge'' and that the PV solar panels represented an ''investment for the future''.

She added: ''With some of the remaining funding we are extending our daycare reception because it''s a busy place with even more daycare and outpatients, so we felt it was important to do something to help.''

Earlier this month, solar PV firm Solarcentury told 24dash.com that British schools could potentially save £3,000 a year by installing PV solar panels.
