The government''s latest clean energy scheme, which is designed to encourage the adoption of things like solar PV panels, might be able to positively address the energy bills faced by homeowners, it is believed.

According to the Energy Saving Trust''s head of knowledge services Dr Paula Owen, people can also boost the efficiency of their homes by adopting a range of other measures.

She commented: ''There are so many ways to do this, from basic measures like replacing your old boiler with an energy efficient model or loft insulation to more advanced approaches like installing renewable micro-generation technology.''

Dr Owen also took the time to highlight the importance of smart meters, which can enable consumers to record exactly how much energy they are making use of.

The potentially high costs that householders might have to deal with this winter have recently been pointed out by the price comparison website moneysupermarket.com.
