Schools installing photovoltaic (PV) solar panels under a new scheme could be reaping benefits to the tune of £68,000 over the next 25 years.

According to the news provider 24dash.com, British schools opting for PV solar panels under the initiative could save up to £840 on electricity bills annually, while generating more than £3,000 a year from the government''s Feed-in Tariff.

Under the scheme, run by solar PV firm Solarcentury, schools will pay for their PV solar panels over 15 years through Feed-in Tariff funding, after which they will own the equipment, which is guaranteed for 25 years.

Derry Newman, chief executive of the firm, told the website: ''Solar electricity is a very positive investment for schools as it introduces a long-term income stream as well as cutting CO2 emissions and bill costs.''

Earlier this week, the government launched the first phase of its plan to get more British homes and organisations involved with microgeneration, by offering greater incentives for choosing solar PV technology.
