Solar thermal panels and other low carbon products are to be adopted by a number of communities, following the allocation of new government funding.
In total, 12 communities are to gain access to the financial support provided by the Low Carbon Community Challenge initiative, it has been revealed.
Joan Ruddock, a government minister for energy and climate change, suggests that the communities involved in the scheme could now go on to set an example to others.
She commented: ''Local people are passionate about building a low carbon future in the UK.
''Today''s winners will act as a test bed for green action and show us all what a greener future looks like.''
Ballymena, Exmoor National Park and Halton are among the areas which have been selected to benefit from the UK-wide funding.
The news follows the government''s confirmation of a number of details surrounding the country''s feed-in tariff scheme earlier this week, with the project expected to be launched towards the beginning of April.
